FF -2 is roughly square in a and is locat en a north -south bend
in the Elk River and the farm field. The more hummocky and ridgy
areas are d ted by a kthorn shrub layer. The buckthorn is quite old and very large
in some areas -21.4 dbh). The understory is a sparse mix of creeping charlie,
thistles, stinging mettle, Woodland sedge, and tree seedlings. Between the two -track path
and the river, the urdt becomes almost uniformly dominated by buckthorn. This buckthorn
stand has clearly undergone a self -thinning process, as the large stems aren't overly dense
in some areas but form a relatively complete sub -canopy. Here, the understory vegetation
is dominated by a carpet of creeping charlie. The native understory vegetation is sparse,
but still includes some white snakeroot, cleavers, gooseberry, meadow rue, horsetails, and
sedge species. Patches of prickly ash and honeysuckle are present beneath the buckthorn
sub -canopy, and scattered Japanese barberry is present as well.
