The understory is a sparse mix of creeping charlie, <br />thistles, stinging mettle, Woodland sedge, and tree seedlings. Between the two -track path <br />and the river, the urdt becomes almost uniformly dominated by buckthorn. This buckthorn <br />stand has clearly undergone a self -thinning process, as the large stems aren't overly dense <br />in some areas but form a relatively complete sub -canopy. Here, the understory vegetation <br />is dominated by a carpet of creeping charlie. The native understory vegetation is sparse, <br />but still includes some white snakeroot, cleavers, gooseberry, meadow rue, horsetails, and <br />sedge species. Patches of prickly ash and honeysuckle are present beneath the buckthorn <br />sub -canopy, and scattered Japanese barberry is present as well.
