The same changes can be noted on the south banks of the Mississippi River; trees were <br />present but sparse - they did not form closed canopied forests. Currently, the vegetation <br />there is largely forested, with pockets of grassland interspersed throughout. A progression <br />of historical photos helps us to understand how the vegetative structure has changed over <br />time (Figure 7; Figure 8; Figure 9). This all points to the likelihood that parts of what is now <br />classified as floodplain forest or woodlands were once savannas 75 years earlier. <br />l <br />Friends of the Mississippi W. H.
