EGty1 ,., Request for Action
River
To Item Number
Mayor and City Council 9.1
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
Work Session January 16, 2018 Michael Hecker, Parks and Recreation Director
Item Description Reviewed by
Elk River Celebration Day Cal Portner, City Administrator
Reviewed by
Action Requested
Discussion.
Background/Discussion
Recreation programming staff has been investigating an Open Street program for Main Street downtown.
Open Street programs are growing in popularity around the country in communities to support their
traditional downtown areas and to bring the community together. We, coincidently, also received an
email from a student asking us to consider a signature community event.
An Open Street program would close some downtown streets for a pedestrian-friendly activity area. Staff
was considering multiple events throughout the summer. Following the Council direction to investigate a
signature community event we have developed the following framework for consideration:
■ Held in downtown Elk River closing Main and Jackson Streets.
■ Saturday,July 7 2018,in the afternoon to evening hours.
■ Move fireworks from July 4 to the event evening.
■ Move the Thursday concert to that evening as well.
■ Move one of the children's Music in the Park to the afternoon.
■ Reach out to community groups to find one to host their fun run on that morning.
■ Solicit other not-for-profits to host contests, games, arts, crafts, etc.
■ Invite food trucks.
Event names staff discussed include Riverfest,Main Street Mania and Celebration on Main.
The open street concept was presented to the Downtown Rivers Edge Association at the January 10
meeting and received positive comments.
Financial Impact
Money already allocated in the budget for fireworks and the Riverfront Concert Series would be used to
support this community event and local groups would be invited to provide other activities.
Attachments
N/A
POWERED 6T
A IR
