EGty1 ,., Request for Action
River
To Item Number
Mayor and City Council 4.4
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
Consent December 18, 2017 Tina Allard, City Clerk
Item Description Reviewed by
Resolution Designating Polling Places Cal Portner, City Administrator
Reviewed by
Action Requested
Adopt,by motion, a resolution designating polling locations for the 2018 elections.
Background/Discussion
The 2017 legislature passed a new law requiring cities to designate polling places for each precinct by
December 31 for the upcoming year. Previous language called for formal action only if a polling location
changed.
It is believed the intent of this legislation was to lessen voter confusion and frustration as it relates to
voters'perceptions of ever changing polling places from one election to the next.
Council will see this item repeat on the agenda at the end of every year. At the recommendation of the
Office of the State Auditor, this will also need to be completed prior to non-election years,in the event of
a special election being called.
Lions Park Center is currently a polling location but with the Center being wrapped into the Arena
improvement project, this space will likely not be available for the 2018 election. Staff is currently
evaluating other options and a change in location must be determined 90 days (May) before the primary
election in order to mail notice to affected residents.
Financial Impact
N/A
Attachments
■ Resolution
The Elk River Vision
A PehoMing community 2a itb revolutionary and spirited resourcefulness, exceptional POWERED By
service, and community engagement that encourages and inspires prosperity INAWRE1
