The
University of Minnesota, a land-grant university,
began on what is now known as the "St. Paul
Campus," with an agricultural focus. This part of
"The U" campus is still in operation still housing
the Departments of Applied Economics, Animal
Science, Agronomy, the Veterinary Sciences and
the School of Forestry, to name a few.

This educational focus was championed by the
private sector as well, spawning many private
colleges and universities in the County, many of
which began at nearly the same time as the
University of Minnesota. The following is a list of
public and private institutions of higher leaning in
Ramsey County:

Home Economics Class
at the University of Minnesota - 1925

Bethel College and Seminary Century College College of St. Catherine
Concordia College Hamline University Macalester College
Metropolitan State University Northwestern College St. Paul Technical College
University of St. Thomas William Mitchell College of Law
University of Minnesota (Saint Paul Campus - one of five campuses in the state)

COUNTY LIBRARY SYSTEM

Two of Ramsey County's Seven Libraries: Roseville and Arden Hills

The County operates seven full-service libraries that are located in the communities they serve.
The City of St. Paul, with a fine library, shared their collection with the suburban regions of
Ramsey County, using bookmobiles as early as the 1920s. The villages of White Bear Lake and
North Saint Paul had their own libraries, which later joined a growing County system. Today,
County libraries are located in Arden Hills, Maplewood, Mounds View, North Saint Paul, Roseville,
Shoreview and White Bear Lake. An appointed Library Board of seven members governs the
system. The Library's annual budget is around $7 million, with the majority of funding coming
from suburban Ramsey County property tax revenue. A strong "Friends of the Library" volunteer
organization raises funds to augment the budget. The equivalent of 110 full-time employees work
at the Library, serving the over 1.3 million people who visit the buildings annually.

~ SPRINGSTED

Page 9
