in the process, maybe after a consultant is hired and has met with us to further discuss the position,
I would like for the Council to give some more thought to the hiring range. The hiring range that
was approved by the Council was $65,000 - $75,000 per year. In this regard, it should be noted that
the three employees which the community development director will be supervising (Catherine
Mehelich, Steve Rohlf, and Michele McPherson) are currently earning $71,447. The top of the hiring
range for the community development director is less than 5% above this wage and my concern is
whether or not we can attract good qualified applicants for the position with this hiring range. Once
again, an executive search firm may be able to provide some input and guidance on this issue.

At this March 14,2005, worksession, the City Council needs to decide how to move forward with
the selection of an executive search firm for the community development director position.

S:\Council\Pat\200S\ Worksessions\Community Development Director Update 0314 OS.doc
