WASTE MANAGEMENT
Elk River Landfill
Elk River Landfill is a regional facility that provides safe and convenient disposal services for communities,
businesses and industries serving Sherburne County and surrounding areas.
Waste Management's approximately 300 disposal facilities employ the latest advances in landfill technology.
This facility is engineered with environmental protection systems that meet or exceed rigorous government
regulations and are subject to highly regulated monitoring and reporting requirements. Systems include
engineered liners and covers, leachate collection and removal, and landfill gas collection and control.
Containment Design
Elk River Landfill utilizes a double -layer, 2 -foot clay and a 60 mil geosynthetic liner system to ensure that
waste and wastewater (leachate) are contained and isolated from soil and groundwater.
Leachate Collection & Treatment
Leachate is discharged to the local Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW).
Groundwater Monitoring
Groundwater is monitored at 31 wells, which are upgradient and downgradient of the waste disposal
footprint. The groundwater monitoring network is sampled and analyzed in accordance with the procedures
of the facility's groundwater sampling and analysis plan.
Landfill Gas Management
Elk River Landfill collects and manages landfill gas through an extensive flare system with 76 wells, which
reduces emissions and minimizes odor. The Landfill -Gas -to -Energy plant produces about 3.2 MW of energy,
and powers approximately 2,400 homes in Elk River, Minnesota.
Security
Site security is ensured by controlled, limited access to the facility through the gatehouse as well as
perimeter fencing and natural barriers. During non -business hours the gate is locked and monitored by
24-hour electronic surveillance.
W9a
WASTE MANAGEMENT®
ELK RIVER LANDFILL
22460 U.S. 169
Elk River, MN 55330
800 963 4776
HOURS OF OPERATION
7:00 am - 4:30 pm
Monday - Friday
Closed Saturday & Sunday
YEAR OPENED
1972
PROJECTED LIFE REMAINING
49 years
FACILITY ACREAGE
510.5 acres
PERMITTED FOOTPRINT
191.4 acres
REMAINING PERMITTED CAPACITY
15M cubic yards
APPROXIMATE TONS PROCESSED
ANNUALLY
300,000 tons
OWNERSHIP
Elk River Landfill, Inc. is owned by
Waste Management of Minnesota, Inc.
PERMIT TYPE & PERMIT #
Waste Facility Permit No. SW -74
REGULATORY AGENCIES
City of Elk River; Minnesota Pollution
Control Agency (MPCA); Occupational
Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA); Sherbourne County
EMPLOYEES
11
THINK GREEN:
