Thj~ let~er follows up on our l'ecen~ telephone con'iersution regarding sp('mlllneous combustion
(sclf-hetlting) of peat. As you know. this phenomenon only occurs under very special
circumstances when mc)isture content, supply, of air (oxy~cn). density of peat, and volume of peat
are ideally suited for seJf-heating. Thi5 huppen.s most often when peat is loosely put intO piJes ,
that are marc than 60 cubic yards. In these piles, $c.lf-hcatil1J can be &reutly reducoo by driving
heavy equipment over the piles. . This significantly reduces the available oxygen for self-heating.

Regardins packaged peat (loose-filled or compressed). there: bas never been; to my knowledge in
2.5 years of working witfl peat products. self-heating of peat in packages. Packaged peat,
. especially if it compressed. dramatically reduces the available oxygen needed for self-heating. .l
know of!IO examples of self-heating pack:lged peat, regud!ess of whet~et' it is stored inside a
heated or unheared building Of oluside in the elements.
