. Preliminary Screening of Transit Technologies

A preliminary screening was completed on the seven transit technologies. The parameters used
placed the transit technologies under the same level of scrutiny so as to have an unbiased
evaluation. Transit technologies were reviewed based on a number of evaluation parameters, these
included:

. Capital cost per mile
· Proven technology with operation in a line-haul mode
· Operating environment (urban, suburban, or activity center)
· Ability to have at-grade station access
. Optimal station spacing distance
· Environmental impacts (emissions, noise, right-of-way, visual)
· Other considerations (ease of implementation, areas where most effective, ridership potential)

Based on the screening analysis, the following transit technologies were drooped from further
study:

. Articulated Trolley Bus
. Guided Bus
. . Heavy Rail Transit
. Monorail
. Personal Rapid Transit
. Automated Guideway Transit

The following transit technologies were recommended to be carried forward into the transportation
strategies for the Phase II MIS:

· Bus
. LRT

· Commuter Rail

Definition of Highway Options

Major roadway improvements included highway and street improvements that have the potential
to increase capacity, improve safety and reduce vehicle conflicts through access improvements.
Typical roadway options included new roadway connections (including new river bridges),
upgrading roadways to complete access control, increasing the number of travel lanes, and access
control measures. Transportation Systems Management (TSM) and Intelligent Transportation
Systems (ITS) improvements were also included.

.

Northstar Corridor Major Investment Study
Conceptual Definition of Alternatives
February 1999

1-5
