After that action, Council directed staff to research how other cities handle religious
symbols, structures, and public art. Staff reviewed our ordinance and several other ordinances to
determine how these items are regulated.
The city's zoning ordinance includes the following sign regulations for each district. Religious signage
falls under the last category:
*For permitted nonresidential uses, such as churches, synagogues, and schools, in residentially zoned
areas, one on -premises freestanding sign and one wall sign, not to exceed 96 square feet in total sign area.
Where a zoning lot has in excess of 1,000 linear feet of combined street frontage, the total sign area shall
not exceed 192 square feet with no more than 96 square feet per sign. Freestanding signage shall not
exceed 20 feet in height.
P a w E R E U 6 Y
NaA f RE]
Wall Signs
Freestandin Signs
Zoning District
Number
Size
Number
Size
Height
(square feet
(squa feet
Central Commercial(Cl)15
percent facade area
1
64
20
Office District C2
15 percent facade area
1
40
7
Highway Commercial (C3)
15 percent facade area
1
150
30
Community Commercial (C4)
15 percent facade area
1
125
10 (Collector Street)
20 (Arterial Street)
Light Industrial (I1)
15 percent facade area
1
150
30
Medium Industrial 2
15 percent facade area
1
150
30
General Industrial 3
15 percent facade area
1
150
30
Business Park (BP)
15 percent facade area
1
150
30
Residential
1
4
1
4
-
Residential — Permitted
One freestanding sign and one wall sign,
Nonresidential Uses
together not to exceed 96 square feet in total
20
sign area*
*For permitted nonresidential uses, such as churches, synagogues, and schools, in residentially zoned
areas, one on -premises freestanding sign and one wall sign, not to exceed 96 square feet in total sign area.
Where a zoning lot has in excess of 1,000 linear feet of combined street frontage, the total sign area shall
not exceed 192 square feet with no more than 96 square feet per sign.
