10/5/2016 Faribault City Council to discuss hookah sampling's future I Archives I southernminn.com
"It's just your basic government getting in the way again," said Robert James, a Faribault resident who says he smokes cigarettes
daily. "They complain about the economy, then consider eliminating a perfectly good business before it can get going."
• What lies ahead for Faribault? Faribault's Planning Commission discussed the hookah lounge/tobacco sampling issue at length
earlier this month, stating they would formally support the city if they chose to prohibit tobacco sampling, according to city documents.
The commission also reviewed possible regulation options, in case the city decides to allow tobacco sampling but wants it more tightly
controlled. They decided it best to treat possible hookah lounges as similar to a bar or restaurant rather than an "adult use" that would
carry more strict regulation.
However, it will be up to city councilors to decide whether to ban sampling, and by extension hookah bars, by changing the tobacco
licensing ordinance. This will be discussed at length Tuesday night (tonight) - and could also result in the city updating its code to
allow sampling locations.
- Joseph Lindberg covers the city and county for the Daily News.
