Patriotism: <br />• Collect non-perishable food and toiletry <br />items for the Anoka County Veterans Food <br />Shelf. <br />• Make fleece tie blankets for the homeless <br />youth of Anoka and the Anoka County <br />Women's Shelter. <br />• Knit and crochet caps for veterans. <br />• Support and participate in the Flag Day <br />5K Race for the Fisher House. <br />Volunteer time and materials to various <br />veterans hospitals and nursing homes, <br />as well as to veterans charities such as <br />The Wounded Warrior Project, DAV, and <br />Red, White and Blue. <br />• Participate with local schools in awarding <br />ROTC medals annually to those schools <br />with active programs. <br />Historic Preservation: <br />• Recognize women who have <br />contributed to our historical legacy <br />through our Women in History program. <br />• Support members who publish books <br />and create websites devoted to local <br />history. <br />• Collect funds for historic signboards at <br />Main and Ferry Streets in Anoka to <br />commemorate Civil War veterans. <br />• Support the Anoka County Historical <br />Society by donating volunteer hours and <br />a subscription to the DAR magazine, <br />American Spirit. <br />• Support the Sibley House in Mendota <br />Heights and Constitution Hall in <br />Washington, D.C. through member <br />contributions. <br />Education: <br />Conduct an American History essay <br />contest for students throughout the area. <br />Winners are invited to read their essays <br />at a chapter meeting and are awarded <br />cash prizes. <br />• Award American History medals to local <br />participants in the National History Day <br />competitions. <br />Recognize high school seniors who <br />possess the qualities of dependability, <br />service, leadership, and patriotism in their <br />communities through the Good Citizens <br />Award and Scholarship Contest. <br />• Celebrate Constitution Week each year <br />by requesting proclamations from cities <br />throughout Anoka County and placing <br />posters and displays at local libraries, <br />city halls, and local businesses. <br />
