E~
River

INFORMATION

Police Department

MEMORANDUM

DATE:
SUBJECT:

Mayor and City Council
Jeffrey A. Beahen, Chief of Police
October 21 , 2004

TO:
FROM:

Support of School District Bond Referendum

On Wednesday October 20, 2004, I attended as a representative of tbe City - tbe
Independent School District 728 Government Advisory Council meeting. This is a new
forum to enhance communication between tbe district and local bodies of government.

One of the agenda items this week, was a request from tbe superintendent to bring a request
to the City Councils witbin tbe district, to ask tbat they endorse or support tbe upcoming
referendum.

The Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce has endorsed tbe referendum, and it appears
tbat otber cities are preparing to support tbe passing of this referendum as well. The district
is trying to get tbe message out that tbe tax impact is very small, classroom sizes based on
growtb are too high, and tbat if this measure does not pass, tbe impact or cost on taxpayers
will be even higher. (Adding portable classrooms is more expensive tben building schools)

I am confident most of you are well informed on this matter. I am merely bringing the
districts request formally to you for you to decide. It needs to be decided however this week,
as tbe vote will take place in two weeks.
