EGty1 ,., Request for Action
River
To Item Number
Mayor and City Council 9.4
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
Work Session Aril 18, 2016 Mark Thompson, Streets Superintendent
Item Description Reviewed by
Reflective Stop Signs Suzanne Fischer,Director, COD
Reviewed by
Cal Portner, City Administrator
Action Requested
Discussion.
Background/Discussion
Streets have installed reflective strips on stop signs in high traffic areas to increase visibility. They serve
the same purpose as the stop signs with the blinking lights around the signs perimeter. The extensions
appear to improve visibility and we have received favorable comments on them.
Currently, the city maintains 609 stop signs and 116 yield signs. We have 10 areas with high visibility stop
signs. This includes 2 blinking solar signs and 8 intersections with reflective panels. The blinking light
stop signs cost approximately$700 and requires some labor. The reflective extensions are either narrow
($28) for channel posts, or wide ($40), for round posts. Each requires approximately one hour of labor.
Police and Engineering identified other areas that may benefit from high visibility signs. Staff will
proceed to install additional signs depending on which areas Council deems priority. Intersections having
shared legs with the County will require visiting with them to determine if they are interested in installing
them as a joint project.
On a related issue, staff received a request from ISD 728 to post`No Parking' signs on the north side of
3rd Street at Line Avenue. Residents of the apartment building park on both sides of 3rd Street and this
causes a tight,if not impossible, path for the school buses. There appears to be adequate parking spaces
for residents of the apartment building to park in the building lot, or on the south side of 3rd Street. Staff
will post`No Parking' signs on the north side of 3rd Street but wanted to inform Council prior to
implementation.
Financial Impact
■ TBD
Attachments
N/A
POWERED 6T
Template Updoted 4/14 INAMIRE1
