• surrounding area. There are four such areas of varying size designated for area
wide parks. They include:
1. The river front area immediately south of the central business district.
This land lies within the floodplain and is currently undeveloped.
2. A 160 acre parcel adjacent to and north of the Elk River Golf Course.
The land is currently undeveloped and has substantial tree stands.
3. The former city dump which is 80 acres in size.
4. An area of 80 to 160 acres surrounding Eagle Lake in the northeastern
quadrant of the city.
d. Trails System
An important feature of the Park Plan is the integration of existing and
• proposed recreation areas through the use of a trail system. The trail system
provides a series of loops through the city. This loop arrangement is designed to
provide access from residential neighborhoods to the park system with a minimum
of traffic conflict with motorized vehicles. Portions of the trail system will be
developed in conjunction with the expansion and development of various
transportation corridors.
The backbone of the trails system is the abandoned Burlington Northern
Railroad bed which runs in a north-south direction from the Central Business
District. Acquisition of the railroad bed is a goal of the city since it is an important
link to the integrated trail system.
•
11
