According to the survey, 52 percent of manufacturers
are facing competition from China, and 50 percent feel that China's growing
manufacturing capabilities have hurt their businesses.
The survey targeted manufacturing sectors from which researchers for the U.S.
411 Trade Deficit Review Commission had identified significant production shifts from
the United States to China. Of the respondents who said competition from China
had hurt their business, 60 percent noted that they had lost business. When asked
to estimate the loss in sales, respondents on average estimated they would lose
about 20 percent of their business in 2003-with larger losses expected over the next
several years.
Finally, while China was the most frequently named competitor, manufacturers also
indicated increasing competition from a number of other countries, including
Mexico, Taiwan, and Canada.
Here is a sample of the results.
