II) Population and Households <br /> Population <br /> Elk River is located in the second fastest growing County in the State of Minnesota according to <br /> the 2000 Census. The City has experienced extensive population growth over the past twenty <br /> years. During the 1980's, the City increased its population by 4,358 persons fora 64.2% <br /> increase. This growth trend continued in the 1990s when the City increased its population from <br /> 11,143 to 16,447, an increase of 47.6%. <br /> It is anticipated that the City will continue to have strong growth trends over the next five years <br /> due to its proximity to major highways and the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. In addition, the <br /> City also provides numerous commercial and industrial opportunities for employment. Between <br /> 2000 and 2005 it is projected that the City will grow by 15.8%, an increase of 2,597 persons. <br /> The entire study area,which includes the City of Elk River and portions of Dayton and Otsego, <br /> has also experienced strong population growth. Between 1990 and 2000 the study area increased <br /> by 7,273 persons, an increase of 46.5%. For the next five years this area will increase by just <br /> over 15%, with the addition of 3,501 persons. <br /> Population by race data produced for the 2000 Census illustrate increases in minority populations <br /> in the community. Each race segment has increased over the past ten years.
