“The City of Bakersfield had the opportunity to work with Spohn Ranch on a design-build skate park at Planz
Park. The entire team: from the designers to the onsite builders, were great to work with from start to finish.
The onsite crews were professional, courteous to other staff members and informative to the public during the
process as well. I was impressed that most of the onsite crew members were also skaters, so they had a
personal interest in making the final product flow from one amenity to the next to create a challenging and
unique skating experience.
During construction, a couple of stray dogs would make their way to the site of the action daily. The crews be-
friended the dogs and gave them food and water. Not wanting to leave them in the park over the weekend,
they took them home. Then, a crewmember did not want to part with the one dog at all and took the
necessary steps to get its shots and license for official adoption. The dog's name is now Carla and accompanies
the crews on construction jobs around the country.
Planz Park Skate Park Opening Day was a big hit with well over 200 young people in attendance. The proof of a
great product is the user's ability to enjoy it for long periods of time, which exceeded expectations. The skate
park can be enjoyed by beginners as well as advanced skaters, which is desirable for a facility where different
ability levels can learn from each other.
Great company, great results and I would recommend Spohn Ranch to other communities interested in a
quality skate park, using the design build process.”
- Dianne Hoover, Recreation and Parks Director

“It has been tough times for recreation departments across America, searching for innovative ways to continue
delivering recreational needs for our communities. While Lexington has a well-used skate park, the community
needed more opportunities to hone skating skills. The site was repurposed from a deteriorated asphalt volleyball
court, to a new concrete pad with concrete features. To make our innovative approach successful, we had to meet
a tight schedule expected by our corporate partner, so children would be able to enjoy the park this summer.

Throughout the project you and Spohn Ranch were very helpful in design assistance, installation, and delivered as
promised. The new skate spot at Kirklevington Park is modest in terms of dollars, but we received the attention I
would expect from a half-million dollar project. At our ribbon cutting event, many skaters complemented the
park’s design and layout. It is extremely well-used as evidenced by the wax on the pieces.

Sincerely, I appreciate your help and professional enthusiasm.”

- Chris Cooperrider, Deputy Director of Parks

PLANZ PARK SKATEPARK – Bakersfield, California
KIRKLEVINGTON SKATE SPOT – Lexington, Kentucky
