Estates housing development in
Elk River, which has become a
through street for residents in
the development and many who
live north of the development,
will be the topic of a special
neighborhood meeting.
Residents who live along
Auburn Street have been before
the planning commission
repeatedly of late to express
their concerns, most of which
center on the speed at which the
traffic moves through the devel-
opment.
The city considered adding
· speed bumps, but residents
voted them down for fear of crc-

dren's safety in the neighbor-
hood have continued to press for
a solution, and the city is ready
to propose one to the residents
who live on Auburn Street and
north of it in Hillside Estates
4th, 5th, 6th and 7th additions.
The neighborhood meeting is
slated for 6 p.m. Thursday,
March 25, at Elk River City
Hall.
City Engineer Terry Maurer
will present a plan to sever
Auburn Street at the point
where NSP power lines cross
over the roadway on the upper
portion of the road. If construct-
ed, the flow of through traffic
would effectively be eliminated.
Current residents of the .north

to get out to Highway 169, as
opposed to 193rd Avenue. So
would residents who live north
of Hillside Estates.
As ~development continues,
more connecting streets will be
built. But none of them would
provide such a direct shortcut to
Highway 169, Maurer said.
"By severing the road, you
would cut out the point in the
roadway where people are real-
ly picking up speed and coming
around blind corners," said
Doran Cote, a resident along
Auburn Street who also serves
as the chair of the planning
commission.
Under the proposal Auburn
Street would be split,' capped on

be landscaped. A path for bicy-
clists and walkers could also be
built.
"If there's overwhelming sup-
port at the meeting, weq] report
that to the council and see what
they want to do," said Maurer,
who will relay the results of the
meeting to the council.
'Tm hoping the residents to
the northeast see a benefit to
this," said Dave Crocker, who
livea'along Auburn.
If support exists and/or the
council desires to proceed, the
question of who will pay for the
project would have to be
resolved.
