MEMO

To:

From:

Subject:

Date:

Terry Maurer, P.E.

Kevin Pape, AICP
Results of Hillside Estates O/D
survey (#806610J-0325)
July 20, 2000

R. Green Co ny

Purpose and Background

The purpose of this memorandum is to document the results of the Hillside Estates origin-
destination (O/D) study. The study was completed in order to estimate how many vehicles
travel or "cut through" the neighborhood to get to and from TH 169. Some residents of the area
have expressed concern over what they believe to be a large number of vehicles using the
neighborhood streets as a shortcut. The roads which comprise the primary route of travel
through the subdivision are 193r~ Avenue, ^ubum Street, and Wilson Street.

Methodology

The O/D study was completed by recording the license plates of vehicles entering and exiting
the subdivision at its two major access points. The first access point is the east leg of the
intersection of 193rd Avenue with Dodge Street. The second access point is the south leg of the
intersection of 197th Avenue with Wilson Street. On Tuesday, July 18th between 2:45 PM and
6:15 PM, the plate numbers of vehicles passing each of these points in both directions was
recorded along with the exact time of day they were seen. The study was conducted during an
evening weekday pedod because existing traffic counts indicated that the peak traffic conditions
typically occur dudng this time. The data collected from the two stations were compared against
one another to see how many vehicles were spotted at both locations. Even though the travel
time between the two locations is approximately 3 to 4 minutes, vehicles were allowed up to 12
minutes to travel between the two spots in order to be counted as a through tdp.

Results

The following list summarizes the number of vehicles recorded at each access point by
direction:
· Station 1 - 193rd Ave (east leg) Eastbound: 197 vehicles
Station 1 - 193rd Ave (east leg) Westbound: 112 vehicles
· Station 2 - Wilson St (south leg) Northbound: 73 vehicles
· Station 2-Wilson St (south leg) Southbound: 61 vehicles

The directional split of the traffic volumes at Station I (193rd Ave) indicate an orientation away
from TH 169 and into the subdivision. This orientation is much less pronounced at Station 2
(Wilson St). This directional orientation is not surprising given drivers are likely headed from
work to home.
