S <br /> Elk River Downtown Commercial Area <br /> Property Description and Significance <br /> 304 Jackson Street,continued <br /> Significance <br /> This building is locally significant for its association with the Houlton family and Elk <br /> River's early mercantile and financial institutions.The relocation of the First National <br /> Bank at this key intersection was an important event after a series of downtown fires. <br /> The present building was apparently completed in 1903, after a previous building also <br /> erected by W.H.Houlton(ca. 1900)burned. <br /> The building has housed many firms.In addition to banks owned by the Houlton <br /> family,early tenants included the Heebner Mercantile Company and the Davis Bros. <br /> Store at the ground level,and masonic organizations on the second floor,including the <br /> G.A.R.Physicians'and other offices were also housed upstairs. <br /> The First National Bank relocated to its present location on Main Street in 1972. <br /> • <br /> Elk River Historic Contexts and Phase II Downtown Commercial Area Study <br /> 54 <br />
