III masonry facade,and brushed aluminum details,the Kemper Drugstore at 323 is locally significant as a well-conserved example of an early 1960s retail building. While most of the buildings on the south side of Main Street date from 1900 to 1914,most have been completely re-clad with wood or masonry facades that greatly alter their present appearance.641 Main Street (ca.1920)stands out as an early twentieth-century building with an intact roofline. Although individual buildings have been modernized,much of the general historic character of turn-of-the-century downtown Elk River has nevertheless survived.Character-defining features of downtown include the pedestrian-oriented size and scale of Main and Jackson street buildings, the integrity of the original street grid and its relationship to the Mississippi River,and the arrangement of buildings around Jackson Square,once Elk River's downtown park.Despite alterations,each downtown building possesses a rich record of connection with a century of Elk River history. Most have the potential for restoration and adaptive reuse and can anchor well- planned new downtown redevelopment. The Elk River Heritage Preservation Commission may consider the local significance of properties in this study in recommending buildings and areas for future local designation.
