Each community is a partner with Habitat and partners
work together.
• The City of Buffalo was concerned about waiving fees due to whether or not it was
clearly for a public purpose and since they do not have an affordable housing policy
Staff Recommendation
There are many programs that communities use to address affordable housing, one of which
is the Habitat for Humanity program.
One of the most requested forms of assistance that Habitat programs make of local
governments is in identifying available lots. The City of Elk River does not track lot
availability. In addition,it is likely that any new single-family lots will be too expensive to fit
Habitat's budget.
Another common form of assistance has been identifying, acquiring, and demolishing a
blighted home and providing the lot to Habitat for the construction of a new home. In
order to provide this assistance, a funding source would need to be identified that could
cover initial costs and fund the gap.
Another issue would be the economies of scale with the level of funding needed and the
number of homes that can be assisted.
•
•
