Elk River Phase II Inventory Form May 2002 Draft
IIIElk River Commercial District
Property Description and Significance
. '
1, f a. "-4 /i7
r z
Address: Southeast corner,Jackson and Main Streets
PIN: Legal:
SHPO Inventory#:pending
Historic Name: Jackson Square
Current Name: Parking Lot
•
Builder I Contractor:
Original Owner/Tenant: of Elk River
Architect/Source:
Date of Original Construction: ca.1900
Date of Survey: March 2002
City
Prepared by: Carole Zellie/Landscape Research
Photo: 6
Property Number: 6
Description
Jackson Square was created when the townsite of Elk River was platted in 1865,but most
the area around it was not built up until after 1900. The square occupied the northern
edgeof the wedge-shaped block;the Blanc
Hotel was at the southern edge. The
space was not improved unti l the early twentieth century;photographs of 1917 show
that the square had a few large mature trees but it does not appear to have been formally
landscaped. A small wooden pavilion fronted on Main Street. The square is now a
surface parking lot.
Significance
Jackson Square was locally significant as the central public space in Elk River and the
focus of many community celebrations and events. If parking was moved from this site,
the space could be restored to its original community function.
III
