The first story
shows the original two bay division of the façade. The square pilasters with simple
capitals flank bays filled with modern display windows. Above a deep cornice trimmed
with a rusticated brownstone band, the upper story has six arched windows surrounded
by a featureless cream brick façade of relatively recent date.
Several historic photos show the building before its upper story modernization and
could be of great use in restoration.
Significance
This building is locally significant as the second location of the Bank of Elk River, the
• first bank in Sherburne County. Established in 1885 with W.L. Babcock,W. H. Houlton
and Henry Castle as officers, the first bank was located on the north side of the railroad
Elk River Commercial District
