• The Phase II historic resources inventory conducted between January and April 2002
focused on 23 downtown properties located within a four-block area(see attached map).
The study found that although a good number of properties remain from the period
1898 to 1920,only two have survived without fairly significant exterior alterations.
None appear to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
However, although individual buildings have been altered, much of the general historic
character of turn-of-the-century downtown Elk River has nevertheless survived.
Character-defining features of downtown include the pedestrian-oriented size and scale
of Main and Jackson street buildings, the integrity of the original street grid and its
relationship to the Mississippi River, and the arrangement of buildings around Jackson
Square,once Elk River's downtown park.
The remaining buildings should not be written off. Each possesses a rich record of
connection with a century of Elk River history. Most have the potential for restoration
and adaptive reuse and can anchor well-planned new downtown development.
•
•
