Jesperson created a 500-acre recreational area along the Elk River <br />and on the border of Elk River and Big Lake Township. The area included camp grounds, <br />picnic areas, roads, a golf course, gardens, and seven plats for homes and cottages. One of <br />the main attractions at Camp Cozy was a three mile canoe route that included man-made <br />canals, a lock and dam, and a flume which allowed canoes to pass over the Elk River and <br />return to the starting point. The Camp Cozy Tavern used to stand between Highway 10 and <br />the Elk River. It burned down in 1962. There was also a dance hall / roller rink near the <br />tavern that burned down in 1965.144 <br /> <br />37 <br />
