TO:

FROM:

DATE:

SUBJECT:

MEMORANDUM

Piayor & City Council

Rebecca Hau§, Environmental Technician

June 7, 2004

PIN ReLeaf Grant

Item ~ 3.5.

If you remember from last year, the City of Elk River along with Baldwin, Livonia, and
Big Lake Townships, and Sherburne County applied for a grant to the Minnesota
Department of Natural Resources - Division of Forestry. The grant monies were
mainly used to implement an oak wilt cost-share program, which provided financial
assistance to landowners for oak wilt suppression, removal of infectious trees, and
restoration of affected sites. Work involved a total of 8 property owners who were
offered 2 options. Based on the option selected, they were eligible to receive between
$50 up to $300 for assistance with removal of eligible trees with a match equal to or
greater than the amount received.

The opportunity to receive additional funding ($15,000) has been offered to the City of
Elk River. If funding were granted, the City would continue to be responsible for
maintaining the program as well as the continued development and implementation of an
oak wilt suppression/education program.

Recommendation
As part of most grants, a cash match is required. Last year the City contributed $500.
Staff recommends the City contribute the same amount for this grant.
