The project was initiated because
2009 Minnesota the City recognized the need to enhance the long-term viability of downtown by attracting
Award of Recreation
and Park people to the downtown area. Rivers Edge Commons Park is a critical piece of that plan.
Excellence Association
Taking advantage of the river's natural ability to attract people, the park has given the
community a popular gathering space and has provided a significant economic boost to
the downtown business district since opening in 2007.
The design process for the park began when HKGi was commissioned by the City to
develop park concepts and complete construction documents for the design, culminating
in the construction of the park in the summer of 2007. The design incorporates an upper
square with shade trees and a popular in-grade fountain feature at the street level,a grand
staircase with a terraced stone amphitheater at the hillside, and a performance area and
gazebo overlooking the River below. The project has been recognized for its outstanding
planning and design by both the Minnesota Recreation and Parks Association and the
Minnesota chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
RIVERS EDGE COMMONS EXPANSION PROPOSAL 17
