Police to host 1.0-week.citizen academy <br />The Elk River' Police Are'as such as' p~rOl funC-- including citizens, business <br /> <br />Department, through the <br />development of a citizen acad- <br />emy, would like to '%ridge the <br />gap" between the police and <br />community. <br /> The Citizen Academy is a <br />free 30-hour course which is <br />designed to give citizens a <br />chance to have better insight <br />as to what the police depart- <br />ment does. Furthermore, the <br />course is broken down into 10 <br />separate sections designed to <br />show participants what types <br />of training is involved in order <br />to be a police officer. <br /> <br />tions, investigations, SWAT <br />(Special Operations and <br />Tactics),' D.A.R.E. (Drug <br />Abuse Resistance Education), <br />defense tactics and crime pre- <br />vention will be covered. <br /> The course, which starts on <br />'Feb. 2 and runs through April <br />12, will be open to citizens 16 <br />years or older. Due to the sen- <br />sitive nature of some of the <br />material covered, all partici- <br />pants will be subject to a crim- <br />inal background check. <br /> The Citizen Academy will be <br />limited to 25 participants, <br /> <br />and government representa- <br />tives, students and neighbor- <br />hood crime watch members. <br /> Those who complete the <br />course will receive a certifi- <br />cate and become a member of <br />the Citizen Academy Alumni <br />Association. <br /> Informational brochures and <br />applications are available at <br />the Elk River Police <br />Department.
