Reflections from Collaboration Meeting 7/16/95
• Voting Tabulations
Create youth process to empower kids; enable them;actively involve kids (16)
If doing a center, use existing empty buildings (12)
Involve youth in decision-making process community-wide, not just youth center(9)
Need bike trails (7)
Center should be a part of an existing business or retail effort, like a fitness center:longevity and staffing built in
already(6)
Should be place for kids to go... hire local"heroes"to staff;get"borderline"kids involved(4)
Share events across group lines:church/school/communities (4)
We need better promotion of what IS happening: advertise for each other/promote for
church/school communities (4)
Center should have multi locations, not just one spot..satellites(4)
If use kids on governing board, make sure to use variety of kids, not just popular ones(3)
Today we're overly cautious about lawsuits...kids need freedom(3)
There are older kids interested in mentoring younger kids (3)
Kids should design, organize and run the center; not make it an adult model (3)
Caring adults should be involved (3)
Should be a multi-interest appeal (3)
Need outdoor pool (3)
Transportation a need(3)
Need an on-going youth advisory group with mentoring group;short-term staff contracts(3)
Have youth involved in staffing decisions (2)
Need space for skate boarders(2)
Atmosphere should be inviting to kids (2)
• Staffing and on-going funding a concern(2)
There should be known rules and consequences for behaviors(2)
Look at why other programs(CBS)declined/appeal changed (1)
Flexibility needs to be built in to accommodate change in market/interest(1)
Currently we look to schools too often to solve problems(1)
"Enough" programming essential so it not become a trouble spot(1)
Funding mechanism important(1)
Lots available now that aren't being utilized (1)
transportation mechanism needed (1)
Whole school district IS the community, not just Elk River(1)
Ball fields are adult-oriented and busy (1)
If a center happens,questions about resources/financing available, staffing/who,variety of
activities offered, security??,family or youth-oriented (target group?),transportation, satellite centers desirable?
Center should not be high cost to users
Municipalities should pay for center
Need satellite parks.more parks
Zimmerman has organized night games
There are already youth programs but not all kids fit into one of them
Target grade 5 through age 16 years
Make it a mobile center, not just one place
Community regulations too restrictive (no loitering..kids ned to do this)
Kids who care less about rules and good behavior need to be there too
The neighborhood perception:if it's a youth center,it will cause problems
Don't forget the 18-21 year olds
Staff training:they need to learn how to work with kids
What doe s the attendance at this morning's meeting say about involving kids?
A place for kids is not necessarily a building;what's happening is what's important
Supervision: a comfort level for kids is what's important
