We are in the process of organizing an amateur radio club in the Elk River area.
Amateur radio(Ham radio)is still a vital link for emergency communications in the event that
local communications are disrupted. One of our members has already talked with the fire chief about
getting involved with some of their drills. We also would like to be involved with community events.
Last summer,we were involved with the Heritage Festival parade providing parade route communications.
Field Day is a nation wide operation that is sponsored by the American Radio Relay League(ARRL).
Amateur radio organizations across the U.S and Canada will be on the air the weekend of June 27&28,
1998 to test their emergency skills, demonstrate who we are to the community and to have fun making
contacts across the country. This operation runs twenty-four hours starting at noon(12:00)that Saturday
until noon(12:00)Sunday. This will mean some of us will be spending the night in the park.
We cannot use commercial power. We will have a generator, screen tent and trailer on site, plus radio
equipment and antennas. The preferred park would be Orono Park because of the area structure and
the visibility of the community.
If you have any questions please feel free to call me at 441-0867.
Sincerely
Allan Wicklund
KBOMDM
•
