This plant produces 15% of Elk River's <br />electrical needs from an otherwise wasted resource! <br />Wind Energy Project is a utility -scale wind generator <br />■ The Vestas V47 was constructed in 2001 as a demonstration site for Energy City. <br />The 213 -ft high wind turbine produces 660 k%V which supplies enough energy for <br />100 homes <br />Great River Energy's Resource Processing Plant <br />• Everyday trash is hauled from the curb and turned into burnable fuel, or resource <br />derived fuel (RDF'). GRE sorts out recyclable metals and shreds material which is <br />then taken to GRE's Elk River Energy Recovery Station <br />Great River Energy's Energ7 Recovery Station <br />• RDF is burned to produce up to 29 MW of electricity, enough to power 25,000 <br />homes. It is dedicated <br />to educating the public regarding ,vise energy decisions. Throughout the years, numerous <br />tours of Energy City have been given to a variety groups ranging froth Minnesota's school <br />children to engineers and business people from RussiaJapan, and Sweden to State <br />Legislators and other politicians. After touring the actual demonstration sites, the <br />Environmental Learning Center at the Elk River Landfill may be used to provide a <br />traditional classroom setting to impart more detailed information. Sherburne County, the <br />Elk River Landfill, and Elk River Municipal Utilities cooperated in building the <br />Environmental Learning Center for this sole purpose. Upon request, Energy City staff will <br />attend area schools, businesses, and organizations for discussions. Additionally, Energy City <br />is represented at various forums, panels, expos, fairs, and other events in the area, expanding <br />the educational reach. <br />Other Projects <br />Project Conserve is an outreach and education program designed to teach residents simple <br />ways to conserve energy, save money on their heating, electrical, and water bills, reduce <br />landfilled waste, save on transportation, and live an overall greener lifestyle.
