February 10, 1998
•To: Park and Recreation Commission
Fr: Jeff Asfahl
Re: February 18, Regular Meeting - Various Recreation Updates
Mighty Kids Grant Application:
- We have received word that the MASC has awarded our grant request for the skatepark
development. Due to the large number and competitiveness of requests, they were only able to
award us $2500.00. We had requested $5000.00 with a required $2500.00 match from the city. The
city will now only be expected to commit $1250.00.
I will be working with Phil to coordinate a strategy to pave the site. The final arrangements for the site
and use agreement with the Skateboard Association are pending.
The Old Prairie House Restaurant Site:
This project is still being pursued. The city planner has asked this project for a Conditional Use
Permit. The project will be reviewed at the February 24th Planning Commission meeting. Please find
attached a summary of the projects vision and site plan.
•
BMX Site Interest:
- I first reported this matter to you in January. Margo Foster and Jon Thompson are two adults who
have taken an interest in BMX and are pursuing development of this type of activity. The commission
agreed that they would like to hear from them at your March meeting. Will the March meeting still
work? What sort of information would you like beforehand?
Mn. State Legislature - 1998 Bonding Bill for Youth Initiatives
- This would provide $30 million available via grant funding to outstate communities. At this time '
anyway, this proposed bill is still alive. I will verbally update you on its status at the 2/18 meeting.
Short term solutions for a concession building at the Youth Athletic Complex:
- Youth Baseball and Girls Softball are each interested in some type of amenity to provide
concessions from at this site. The commissions thoughts on any solutions will be appreciated.
I have enquired into some surplus travel trailers that were brought into East Grand Forks last spring
to house displaced residents from the flood. These trailers are being offered to communities in
Minnesota to enhance their emergency management programs. This use is certainly a stretch, but it
was believed by Bruce West (ER. Fire Chief) that not all of the available trailers would be needed and
"'then this sort of request may be considered.
I will update the commission about this matter and also share an idea.
