PARK CLASSIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS <br />Elk River's park system is made up of a variety of parks and open spaces, each <br />with different purposes, characteristics, uses, and ownership. Classifications <br />define and clarify the intended use of each park type and indoor recreation <br />facility and also clarify the area served, access, and typical features of each <br />park type and indoor recreation facility. This table is particularly useful when <br />TABLE 6.4 PARK CLASSIFICATIONS <br />WSSIFTUITHUM ������.DESCRI ■ <br />Neighborhood Park Primary recreation facility to meet the day -to -day needs of neighborhoods. Provides active <br />) <br />recreation and informal gathering spaces for families and groups of neighbors. The Focus is on protecting <br />Greenways ecological resources and providing wildlife and trail corridors. Secondary use is for trails, <br />assuming that they can be integrated without compromising the integrity of the natural <br />systems. <br />Special Use Facility A broad range of land and buildings with a primary use such as a nature center, senior center, <br />historic sites, activity center, etc. <br />Undeveloped Park Park land held for future recreation development or future nature preserve. <br />Parks and open spaces with a natural resource and larger acreage focus. Classification as <br />Regional Park a regional park is coordinated through the greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails <br />Commission <br />Park and recreation facilities that are owned and operated by Independent School District 728. <br />School Facilities These facilities are often used in partnership with the City of Elk River. Typical uses include <br />playgrounds and athletic facilities. <br />Park and recreation facilities that are privately owned and maintained, yet contribute to the <br />Private Park public park and recreation system.
