. � 11' <br /> Elk Elk River Comp ehensive Plan <br /> River <br /> Key Demographic Trends <br /> In addition to knowing how many people live and will likely live in Elk River, understanding <br /> the key characteristics of the people, such as their age, education and employment status <br /> can aid the City in planning for and providing necessary and desired services for all of its <br /> residents. <br /> Age Composition <br /> The population of Elk River is growing older as the median age is increasing from 28.2 in <br /> 1970 to 34.4 in 2010. The rate of median age change in the community has slowed, with <br /> the rates from 1990-2010 changing by one percent or less each year. In 2010 the 35-44 <br /> age category was the largest in Elk River, and the second largest between ages 25-34. This <br /> reflects a trend of younger households in the community, which will desire quality housing, <br /> schools, recreational opportunities, and public services. Over the next 30 to 40 years this <br /> age group will be aging and consequently requiring require senior housing options to remain <br /> in the community. Alternatively, older populations may move out of the community leaving <br /> housing stock open for younger families to move in.
