Ice Arena Commission Meeting Page 2
April 1, 1997
6. 1997-98 Ice Rink Usage Schedule
Arena Manager Rich Czech discussed with the Commission the status of the 1997-
98 ice rink usage schedule for skating and dry floor events. The Youth Hockey, Elk
River High School, and Monticello High School schedules were discussed along
with the status of the ice contracts with both high schools. Spring and fall hockey
leagues were discussed as well as summer clinics. An update was provided on
the 3/29/97 dry floor event where over 200 community youth were in attendance.
Commissioner Kupka gave an update on the status of the in-line skating league.
7.1. Signage for Dasher Boards
Ice Arena Manager Rich Czech reviewed the background material he provided
the Commission in the agenda packet. Youth Hockey representatives (Dale
Martin) indicated that this would be a topic at an upcoming meeting and that
Youth Hockey is planning to work with Rich on selling signage for the dasher
boards. An advertising insert into the Chamber newsletter was discussed.
7.2. Arena Signage and Name
Commissioner Kupka suggested a "Name the Arena" contest and the
Commission concurred and directed staff to request Council approval for this
contest. Chair Martin indicated that Youth Hockey had committed to signage for
the arena, but may have to partner with the city if the amount of signage and
cost of the signage exceeds the initial expectations.
• 7.3. City Insurance Policy
The City Administrator briefly discussed the status of the city insurance policy
regarding organizations and activities in the ice arena.
7.4. Building Plaque
The content, location, timing, and cost of a plaque was discussed. Staff was
requested to obtain a cost estimate. The Commission agreed not to include paid
consultants on the plaque.
Commissioner Farber left the meeting at this time.
7.5. Public Address System
City Administrator Pat Klaers noted that Council approval is required for this
purchase. The Commission directed the Ice Arena Manager to get a second
quote for the P.A. system. Commission Gongoll noted that school participation in
this purchase is uncertain at this time.
7.6.
