Joint Program Planning meeting: Early Childhood Family Education, Community Recreation and <br /> Community Education <br /> Monday, March 1, 1999 <br /> Meeting was held in the faculty lounge at Handke. The meeting was called to order at 6:37 pm. <br /> Present: Therese VanBlarcom, Marguerite Jordan, Stacy Hipsag, John Kuester, Jeff Asfahl, Kathy <br /> Simonson, Linda Ostmoe, Kelly Vrchota, Duane Peterson, Kari Kurtz, Mary Dwyer, Darlene Nickols, <br /> Noella Fath, Charlie Blesener. <br /> Participants introduced themselves and and told about themselves, family, interests etc. <br /> The joint planning efforts up to this point, including a brief recap of the Feb. 1, 1999 meeting were <br /> presented. <br /> Information on a Value of Citizen Work grant was presented. We are the recipient of this$2,000 <br /> grant. Part of the purpose of the grant is for the sponsoring organizations (Humphrey Institute at the U <br /> of M, Minnesota Community Education Assn., the Mott Foundation, and the Minnesota Dept of <br /> Children Families and Learning) to learn about why citizens get involved in their communities and <br /> volunteer. Our hope locally is that we can use the grant to help support ways in which our three <br /> organizations (which are serving essentially the same population) can attract and retain citizen <br /> involvement in our decision-making and program planning, and to continue to develop ways that we <br /> can jointly plan while connecting the citizens that advise the three organizations. <br /> The three goals which were developed at the Feb. 1, 1999 meeting were briefly reviewed. The goals <br /> are: <br /> •1. Identify and plan for and market to different audiences. <br /> •2. Provide a bridge between citizens and government leaders addressing community <br /> growth. <br /> •3. More collaboration/increase convenience and opportunities for residents. <br /> Goal 1: Identify and plan for and market to different audiences. <br /> The group first identified specific audiences in our communities as related to the first goal. <br /> These audiences included: <br /> 'economically disadvantaged <br /> •young adults (singles) <br /> 'single parents and blended families <br /> •pre-school children <br /> •infants/toddlers <br /> 'school age children <br /> •adults with disabilities <br /> *adults <br /> 'men <br /> 'empty nesters <br /> *young families <br /> 'senior citizens <br /> The group then brainstormed possible offerings or needs that each audience may have that we could <br /> attempt to meet, as well as ways to market to each unique audience. The data generated is as follows: <br /> *economically disadvantaged <br /> transportation <br /> low cost recreational & educational activities <br /> fees waived for all activities <br /> ideas for activities that don't cost anything <br /> scholarships---not only fee waivers <br /> fee waivers <br /> apartment programs or transportation <br /> discounts if you give someone without transportation a ride <br />
