How does the law affect me? <br /> Snowmobiles equipped with studs are welcome in Minnesota. Minnesota-registered <br /> snowmobiles need a$13 metal traction device permit. Studded tracks are not allowed on paved <br /> public trails. The metal traction device permit is available by mail from the DNR License Bureau <br /> and deputy registrars. A metal traction device permit is not required for snowmobiles registered <br /> in other states. <br /> A law restricting metal studs on paved trails was passed in response to concern about damage to <br /> roads, bridge decks,paved trails and private driveways crossed by snowmobiles with studs. <br /> Public paved trails account for less than two percent of Minnesota's extensive snowmobile trail <br /> system. However, groomed, signed routes have been developed for snowmobiles with studs near <br /> many paved trails. <br /> Out-of-state snowmobiles:All snowmobiles not registered in Minnesota a$16 Minnesota State Trail Permit to use <br /> state or grant-in-aid trails.Get this permit in person at Electronic License System agents,by mail from the DNR <br /> • License Bureau(order form,or by phone at 1-800-285-2000. Snowmobiles with studs registered out-of-state will not <br /> need a stud sticker. <br /> How will the money raised by the permit sales be spent? <br /> Proceeds from the permit sales will be used to repair paved trails damaged by snowmobiles with <br /> studs,with the remainder going to the dedicated snowmobile account. <br /> Do I have to buy a metal traction device permit if I don't ride on paved trails? <br /> Yes, a permit is required during the snowmobile season of 2000-2001 for all Minnesota <br /> registered snowmobiles with tracks equipped with studs, regardless of where in Minnesota the <br /> machine is operated.
