Background/Discussion The existing dehumidifier in The Barn Ice Arena is a mechanical unit that doesn't operate very efficiently or effectively. The resulting humidity has adverse effects on the building structure, creates a heavy load on the ice plant when operating and at certain temperatures leaves a fog and a lot of moisture in the building when renting to groups which has limited our ability to rent the rink. Despite the 2012 study by performed by Halberg Consulting Engineers outlining the needs of Arena that included a dehumidifier,we have hesitated to invest money in the building for a short-term solution when the entire facility will need major upgrades or replacement. We have recently identified a new dehumidifier technology that is very efficient, compact and significantly lower in cost than past replacement options. Further, the dehumidifier unit could easily be used in a new or upgraded facility. Arena staff has received two quotes from trusted arena suppliers. The dehumidifier is in the Arena's Capital Improvement Plan, and the Arena Fund has funds available for the purchase. Financial Impact The total cost of the project is $56,214.00 and is included in the 2014 Arena budget.
