City of
Elk - Request for Action
River
To Item Number
Parks and Recreation Commission 8.4
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
General Business July 9, 2014 Michael Hecker, Parks and Recreation Director
Item Description Reviewed by
Renaming of Lions Park Cal Portner, City Administrator
Reviewed by
Action Requested
Approve,by motion, the renaming of Lions Park as the Lion John lleicht Park as recommended by the
Parks and Recreation Commission.
Background/Discussion
The Parks and Recreation Commission discussed and reviewed a request from the Lions Club that Lions
Park be renamed as the Lion John Weicht Park. This request was submitted in writing at the May Parks
and Recreation Commission meeting, as outlined in the Parks and Facilities Naming Policy. Also, as
required in the policy, a public notice requesting a public meeting for renaming was posted and published
in the local paper at least 10-days prior to the June 11 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting.
The action was unanimously supported by the Commission. There were no general public comments on
the renaming. The Lions Club had many members in attendance supporting the renaming.
Discussion at the May meeting regarding the initial renaming included changing the name of Lions Park
to the Lion John Weicht Park and taking out the word "Memorial' that was originally proposed. The
Lions Club did vote and approved the final recommended name of Lion John Weicht Park.
Staff has reviewed the submission and finds that it meets the criteria to rename a park as outlined in the
Parks and Facilities Naming Policy.
Financial Impact
A new park entrance sign to replace the current one is in the range of$5,000 to $7,000. Lions Club
members indicated at the May Commission meeting they are interested in financially supporting a new
park sign. Staff recommends waiting until the city way finding project is completed before installing new
signs in any of the parks. Additional costs for renaming include updating city maps and marketing
materials.
Attachments
• Submission request to rename Lions Park
• Parks &Facilities Naming Policy
• Lions Park renaming correspondence
P a w E A E U s r
NaA f RE]
