Regional Commissioner Charlene Peiffer <br /> noted that the energy index increased 2.2 percent in 2013, primarily due to higher prices for electricity and <br /> utility (piped) gas service. Food prices were up 0.8 percent. The index for all items less food and energy <br /> increased 2.1 percent. Within the all items less food and energy category, the indexes for shelter, medical care, <br /> and education and communication were higher over the year. <br /> Food <br /> Average annual food prices rose 0.8 percent in 2013 after rising 2.8 percent in 2012. Between the two <br /> components of the food index, prices for food at home increased 0.4 percent and the food away from home <br /> index rose 1.1 percent. <br /> Energy <br /> The energy index increased 2.2 percent in 2013 after declining 2.3 percent in 2012. Within the energy category, <br /> the index for electricity rose 11.0 percent and the index for utility (piped) gas service increased 12.6 percent. <br /> Gasoline prices were 2.9 percent lower compared to their 2012 averages. <br /> All items less food and energy <br /> Over the year, the annual average index for all items less food and energy increased 2.1 percent.
