Memo to Mayor and City Council/Signs in Right of Way
November 13, 2001
Page 2

The Sherburne County Board of Commissioners, at their September 4th meeting, directed
their staff to inform all realtors and developers to remove signs from the right-of-way, as
they are not permitted by State law to be there.

In order to eliminate signs within the right of way, two approaches should be pursued:

Inform all developers and new residents of the requirements of the ordinance
stated above.
Remove signs located in the right of way, regardless of content.

The second task will require the cooperation and assistance of all staff that are "out in the
field" i.e. Public Works, Building Inspectors, Police, etc.

Recommendation

If the Council feels strongly about removing signs from the public right of way, staff
recommends that the Council direct staff to complete the following tasks:

Inform all developers and new residents of the requirements of the ordinance
stated above.
Remove signs located in the right of way, regardless of content.

S:\PLANNING\MICHMC\CCREPRTSXaR-O-Wsigns.doc
