River

MEMORANDUM

Item 4.2.

TO:

FROM:

DATE:

SUBJECT:

Mayor and City Council

Pat Klaers, City Adminis~_~
November 13, 2001

Consider Soil Boring Quote for Joplin Street Parcel

At the October 22, 2001, City Council meeting approval for soil borings around and west of
City Hall was received. The low quote turned out to be from STS Consultants in the amount
of $3,100.

At the October 22, 2001, meeting discussion also took place regarding soil borings at the
Joplin Street and Business Center Drive site. The quote from STS Consultants is $2,000 for
this work. It is recommended that we not authorize this work at this 6me.

If the Joplin Street soil borings could have been taken at the same time as the City Hall soil
borings then the cost would have been $1,700; however, the City Hall soil borings were
completed on Thursday, November 8, 2001, so we have missed this opportunity to save $300.
I think we should wait on authorizing any soil borings at Joplin Street un61 we see if that
location is going to be the home of a future satellite fire station. This decision on the fire
satellite station location may be made by the City Council as early as November 19, 2001 (our
next City Hall-Police Station worksession meeting date). Based on the buildings that are
constructed around this Joplin Street site, I don't kno~v that soil borings ~vould be particularly
valuable information in selling the site to a private developer.

Recommenda tion
No action is being recommended with this agenda item but the issue may come back for
further discussion in later November or December.
