Chapter 5: Land Use / 33 <br />Elk River Comprehensive Plan <br />Mining <br />In 2013, the Mining use makes up 1,869 acres or <br />7.2% of the City and its primary objective is to <br />allow the current mining use of the land within this <br />category. These areas are currently being mined or <br />are set aside for future mining. <br />Undeveloped <br />Undeveloped land refers to land that is in an <br />undeveloped state, but that is guided and zoned <br />for future development or use. These lands may <br />currently be used for agricultural or agricultural <br />research purpose, or may be vacant land awaiting <br />future development to occur (specifi cally areas <br />currently within the MUSA boundary). Wetlands are <br />not included in this category. In 2013, roughly 8,840 <br />acres or 34.2% of Elk River consisted of vacant/ <br />undeveloped land. <br />Road Right-of-Way/Railroad <br />In 2013, road right-of-ways and railroads accounted <br />for roughly 205 acres or 0.8% of Elk River. Road <br />right-of-way include city, county, state road right- <br />of-ways. Refer to Chapter 6: Transportation for <br />additional information. <br />Public/Semi-Public <br />Public/Semi-Public uses make up approximately 564 <br />acres or 2.7% of area in Elk River and refer to larger <br />tracts of lands used for public and institutional (religious <br />and educational) purposes. These uses include schools, <br />City and County governmental buildings, and religious <br />uses. <br />Open Space <br />The Open Space category contains parks and <br />open spaces, and the City’s recreation system. <br />Approximately 1,812 acres or 7.0% of land in 2013 <br />is allocated to the Open Space land use. Some of the <br />existing open space involves private recreation facilities <br />(such as golf courses). <br />Wetlands/Open Water <br />The land use map includes areas identifi ed as wetlands <br />according to the most recent National Wetland Inventory <br />as well as bodies of water in the City.
