Chapter 4: Community Context / 29 <br />Elk River Comprehensive Plan <br />Summary of Demographic Trends <br />Affecting Elk River <br />The number of people living in Elk River will grow at a fairly consistent rate until <br />2035. However, the percentage of residents over the age of 65 will continue <br />to increase, which has ramifi cations for the types of housing and community <br />facilities and services that Elk River will need to provide its residents. In a <br />related matter, the average household size will continue to decrease over the <br />years, meaning that Elk River will need to provide additional housing units both <br />to accommodate the projected future population and maintaining its current <br />population. <br />As the population continues to grow, planning for a diversifi ed population <br />will be instrumental to providing for all within the community. Employment <br />opportunities in Elk River are expected to gradually increase and opportunities <br />for development and redevelopment will be critical to providing for these <br />opportunities.
