PROCLAMATION Proclaiming Mayors Week of Recognition for National Small Business Week May 12 — 16, 2014 WHEREAS, The City of Elk River celebrates local small businesses and the contributions they make to our economy and the community. WHEREAS, According to the United States Small Business Administration,there are currently 28 million small businesses in the United States,which represents more than 99 percent of American companies, create two-thirds of the new jobs, and generates one-half of the private,gross domestic product; and WHEREAS, In the United States, small businesses employ one-half of the employees in the private sector; and WHEREAS, In the United States, 89 percent of consumers agree that small businesses contribute positively to the local community by supplying jobs and generating tax revenue and 86 percent of consumers have small businesses in their community the consumers would miss if the small businesses closed; and WHEREAS, In the United States, 93 percent of consumers agree it is important for people to support the small businesses they value in their community, and 90 percent of consumers are willing to pledge support for a "buy local' movement;and WHEREAS, The City of Elk River supports local businesses that create jobs,boost the local economy, and preserve neighborhoods;and WHEREAS, Advocacy groups and public and private organizations across the United States have endorsed the week of May 12, 2014, National Small Business Week. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED on behalf of the City of Elk River, I,John J. Dietz, Mayor of the City of Elk River, do hereby proclaim the week of May 12, 2014, as National Small Business Week in the City of Elk River and encourage residents to recognize the positive impact small businesses have on our economy and our community.
