City of <br /> Elk Request for Action <br /> River <br /> To Item Number <br /> Mayor and City Council 4.8 <br /> Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by <br /> Consent Aril 21, 2014 T.John Cunningham,Fire Chief <br /> Item Description Reviewed by <br /> Authorize Hiring of Firefighters Cal Portner, City Administrator <br /> Reviewed by <br /> Action Requested <br /> Approve,by motion,the hiring of on-call firefighters, effective April 21, 2014. <br /> Background/Discussion <br /> After a thorough recruitment and selection process, consisting of physical agility testing and interviews, <br /> the aforementioned individuals are being brought forward to join the ranks of the Elk River Fire <br /> Department as probationary on-call firefighters. The most recent recruitment brought forward 24 <br /> applicants, of which 17 candidates were interviewed. Nine candidates moved forward to complete a <br /> background check and medical screening. <br /> The nine probationary firefighters will begin the Elk River Fire Academy,an in-house training program, <br /> upon approval that will prepare them for state certification testing. Modeled after a similar program in <br /> Anoka County,the program is designed to teach not only the fundamental skills of firefighting but will <br /> also cover topics such as pride/honor,local governance, county operations,and other pertinent skills. <br /> Upon completion of the academy,graduates will be administered the Oath of Office and will receive their <br /> badges. <br /> Financial Impact <br /> Probationary firefighters will be compensated $8/hour in accordance with the city's pay plan. <br /> Attachments <br /> ■ List of on-call firefighters <br /> P a w E A E U s r <br /> NaA f RE] <br />
