ity of

Item 5.2.

Memorandum

TO: MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL

FROM: STEPHEN ROHLF, BUILDING
& ZONING ADMINISTRATOR

DATE:

NOVEMBER 23, 1998

SUBJECT:

CONSIDER HOUSING
INSPECTOR'S RESIGNATION
AND REFILL POSITION

Jay Carlson, the Housing/Building Inspector for the City, has accepted a position at North
HennePin Technical College teaching carpentry. Jay indicated that he regrets leaving Elk
River, but this new position is a good opportunity for him. He feels the three things he
will like most about being a teacher are June, July and August.

Jay has been in charge of the City's rental inspection and licensing program for the past
year. The bulk of the rental inspections are done from now until spring so the Housing/
Building Inspector's time is available for building inspections during the construction
season.

This position is needed and staff is recommending it be filled as soon as possible. Jay
was working within pay grade 13, which has a salary range of $12.84 to $20.92 an hour.
With the Council's permission, staff will advertise the position within this same range.
The market for inspectors is tight at this time. Hopefully a qualified candidates can be
found.

s:\b&z\stever\camascup.doc

13065 Orono Parkway · P.O.
