Elk River .
Municipal Utilities UTILITIES COMMISSION MEETING
TO: FROM:
Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission Tom Sagstetter- Conservation and Key Accounts
John Dietz—Chair Manager
Al Nadeau—Vice Chair
Daryl Thompson—Trustee
MEETING DATE: AGENDA ITEM NUMBER:
February 11, 2014 6.1f
SUBJECT:
Staff Update
DISCUSSION:
• Completed the asset transfer of the 3 replacement engines at the gas to electric plant at
the Elk River Landfill.
• As part of the expansion of the landfill gas to electric plant, ERMU has had discussions
with City Staff as well as Waste Management on ways to handle and dispose of leachate.
Leachate is water that has come in contact with municipal solid waste. There are a
number of options for handling the leachate, but if evaporation is determined to be the
best option the existing excess methane that would be used to power additional electric
generation would be used to evaporate water. If evaporation is the option there will not
be enough excess methane to make the gas plant expansion feasible.
• Attended the I-94 West State of The Cities Chamber of Commerce event and learned that
many communities are starting to see consistent and significant growth. Rogers and
Otsego both added over 130 new homes and are looking at the same if not more growth.
Rogers is looking at adding between 500,000— 1,000,000 sq. ft. of industrial/distribution
space in 2014. Otsego has a project where they will add approximately 300,000 of
warehouse space. The other communities that were part of the presentation that are
showing continuing signs of growth are St. Michael, Albertville, Dayton, Hanover, and
Corcoran.
• Participated in Hockey Day Minnesota representing ERMU in the Incident Command
Center training exercise. It was a helpful experience that will be beneficial if and when
we actually need to mobilize in the event of a true emergency.
• There are many questions on rebates. Everyone has new budgets at the beginning of the
year and the vendors are out knocking on doors for new business. LED lights are the hot
item at this point.
• Based on the very cold weather there are many customers calling about high use and high
bills. The CSRs are doing a great job of explaining what causes high bills. With the price
of propane and shortage there have been many calls about the benefits of the dual fuel
program.
In
Page 1 of 1 'WIRED 11
NATURE
Reliable rovider
P OWfREO TO SfRVE
203
•
